Last Saturday Evening came to Town the Capts. Coffin and Fernald, having been taken. Capt. Coffin in a Sloop, and Capt. Fernald in a Schooner, and carried into Porto Rico, where they with between 20 and 40 other Capts. of Vessels were closely confined in Goal for three Months, not having any Thing allowed them the whole Time for Food but Cattle Guts, &c. the Spaniards telling them that Beef was too good for Englishmen. The 3d of September the above Capts. with 8 others were released out of Goal, with paying a Ransom of Twenty odd Dollars for each Man ; and when they came out left 200 Englishmen in Goal there, with Nothing but the above Food to feed upon, which, (together with their being informed that the Governor of Antigua had denied to settle a Cartel, was the occasion of their lying there) caused many of them to enter on board Spanish Privateers to cruize against their own Countrymen.
