Full Text

The Attack on Sandy Bay—We mentioned this affair in our last. A gentleman who was present has since given us some particulars of it. He says the privateer (called the Commodore Borke) did not chase any coasters in; several arrived in the forenoon, which saw her, but were not chased by her. In the afternoon she was seen standing into the harbour; in consequence of which the people assembled on the wharves with two six pounders which had lately been sent them by order of his Excellency the Commander in Chief; but not certain what she was, they were just raising the trumpet to hail her, when she saluted them with a discharge of round and grape shot, and immediately after with a second; the round shot passed over their heads, but the grape flew among the multitude on the wharves though fortunately without hurting any one. Our people then returned the salute. On this, the privateer, probably not expecting they were provided with cannon, sheered off.
