DIRECTOR FOR WILD LIFE
SURVEY IN ARIZONA NAMED
TUCSON (Ariz.) Feb. 16 - Andrew A. Nichol, University of Arizona range ecologist, has been named to direct the first complete wild-life survey of the Copper State ever undertaken. By the end of 1940 more will be known about the birds and animals of Arizona, their numbers and distribution, than was ever known before.

Just how much money will be available for the survey is not known, but it will certainly be more than $50,000. The funds will be mostly Federal, distributed through the National Wildlife Federation.

DISTRICT DIVISIONS
Director Nichol plans to divide the State into several districts for his investigations. He will work in close co-operation with the Arizona Fish and Game Commission. Pledges of aid have come from the Arizona Cattle Growers and Wool Growers Associations. U.S. Forest Service, Soil Conservation Service, and Grazing Service.

FEDERAL AID
First an "inventory" will be made of game and fur-bearing species, and of birds. As the work progresses recommendations will be made to the State Game Commission as to management practices, and also as to further Federal aid in developing or protecting desirable fauna.

Nichol is a recognized authority on both the vegetation and wild life of Arizona, the author of numerous university publications and magazine articles. For the last two or three years he has spent most of his time on leave, making mountain sheep investigations for the National Park Service.
