For Sen. Merwin
A cablegram inquiring into the affiliation of Senator John D. Merwin with the Republican Party, and requesting the clearance of local Republicans for his appointment as Government Secretary of the Virgin Islands was sent to Evan Francois, National Republican Committeeman a few days ago by Mrs. Ethel Friedlander head of the personnel section of the Republican National Committee.
Mr. Francois has sent a reply rejecting the Merwin appointment on the ground that the legislator bolted the Republican party in 1956 to organize a rival People's Party, under whose banner he was elected to the legislature.
John Stevens, chairman of the St. Croix Republican Club, also opposed the appointment of Merwin due to his opposition to the local Republican Club.
Supporters of Merwin's predicted that despite the refusal of Virgin Islands Republicans to give their endorsement to the legislator, the appointment will be announced shortly in Washington. He is said to have the solid backing of officials of the Department of Interior, in addition to the support of Governor Walter Gordon.
Since he quit the Republican organization to organize the People's Party, Merwin has been openly critical of the Republicans, and some members of the club believe that his appointment would be a direct insult to them.
