It is with a degree of horror seldom experienced by the editor hereof, that he enters upon the recital of the following melancholy event.—A few days ago an unhappy dispute took place at Bath, between a Captain Randolph and another gentleman, whose name we have not heard; that a challenge was sent by the latter to the former, of which a Captain Thomas was the bearer; that Captain R. refused the challenge, and threw the note on the ground, signifying at the same time. that he did not think his opponent upon an equality with him. The behaviour of Captain R. irritated Captain Thomas who also dared him to combat, which was refused by the former on the same score. A day or two afterwards, Captain Thomas was boasting in company that he had frightened some of the Continentals. This behaviour drew down the vengeance of Major Blackburn, 'who very unfortunately happened to be present : his resentment knew no bounds— He assailed Captain Thomas, and (Oh! that we could break off here! but, alas! the sequel, mournful as it is, must be disclosed with a dirk, put a period to his existence! The unhappy Major Blackburn is committed to prison at Martinsburgh.
