To the terrified imagination of the Hindoo community, it looked as if all the 1200 youth in the Institution were about to abjure Hinduism and embrace Christianity; and the fear that Hinduism itself, was on the eve of utter annihilation, spread such consternation throughout the city, that the cry of, down with Christianity! down with the Missionaries! and down with Free Church Institutions!—echoed from every bazaar and every street in the city.—Several hundred had left the institution, but the fact, he says, that in the midst of such an excited state of public feeling, some six or seven hundred pupils should remain in the school, quietly pursuing their regular studies, only proves how amazingly deep a hold the institution has on the native mind, and what a deep seated lodgment it has secured for itself in the very strong hold of society.
