THE AMERICAN.
PROVIDENCE,
Friday, March 9, 1821.

STATE ELECTION.

The "Patriot" of Wednesday last announces, in ample form and order, the following gentlemen as the republican candidates for State officers, for the ensuing political year--

WILLIAM C. GIBBS, of Newport, Governor; CALEB EARLE, of Providence, Lieutenant-Governor.

Senators.--Philip MARTIN, of Providence; Thomas FRY, of East-Greenwich; Nathan BROWN, of Johnston; William PEARCE, of Bristol; Benjamin SMITH, of North-Kingstown; Stephen B. CORNELL, of Portsmouth; William HUMPHREY, of Tiverton; William WHIPPLE, of Cumberland; Elisha WATSON, of South-Kingstown; John R. WATERMAN, of Warwick; Henry Bowen, Secretary; Dutee J. PEARCE, Attorney-General; Thomas G. PITMAN, General-Treasurer.

It will be seen that, with a few exceptions, the present incumbents are nominated for re-election. The above nomination is accompanied with sundry remarks by the "Patriot," which are marvellously decorous and conciliatory--the minority are alternately cautioned and coaxed not to oppose the nomination of the exclusive republicans, who all at once have come out the rampant friends of a Constitution; and especial care is taken to say nothing about the Aristocrats, Hartford Conventionists, &c. on which topics the "Patriot" has, heretofore, delighted to dwell. We may hereafter have occasion to advert to the fallacies, by which the "Patriot" seeks to neutralize opposition.

We have not ascertained the result of the Convention held in this town last evening, for the purpose of "adopting such measures as may be deemed expedient, preparatory to the Election in April next."
