DR. DOLLINGER AND THE BIBLE.—The too-notorious Munich Professor, in his letter to the Augsburg Gazette, says: "The Council without the Pope being fallible, it is the Pope whose consent renders the resolutions of the Council valid. And thus everything resolves itself into the Pope testifying to his own qualities, which, it must be confessed, is a remarkably simple mode of reasoning. Who, when witnessing this, can help remembering what a far higher Being said 1840 years ago? If I bear testimony of myself, my testimony is not true."
John, V., 31st." The Bien Public observes upon the letter of the Munich scholar, that it is simply a declaration of "Dr. Dollinger's infallibility against the infallibility of the Church."
We regret that this gentleman did not continue his quotations from the Gospel of St. John, which he uses, like a skilful Protestant, to confound the Pope. He would have found in the 5th chapter the following words: "The Pharisees therefore said unto Him, Thou bearest testimony of Thyself; Thy testimony is not true. Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear testimony of myself, yet my testimony is true," and then he added words which demand more earnest attention than they are likely to receive from men who scoff at the successor of St. Peter, "For I know whence I came, and whither I go, but you cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go."
Every man is a volume, if you but knew how to read him,

Key Arguments

Dollinger's Argument Reduces To The Pope Testifying To His Own Infallibility, Which He Mocks Using John 5:31 Out Of Context. The Bien Public Sees It As Dollinger's Infallibility Versus The Church's. Regret That Dollinger, Like A Protestant, Selectively Quotes Scripture To Attack The Pope. Jesus In John 5:31 32 Affirms His Own Testimony Despite Similar Accusations From Pharisees. Jesus Knows His Origin And Destiny, Unlike His Critics, Paralleling The Pope's Authority. Men Who Scoff At The Pope's Successor Ignore Deeper Scriptural Truths.
