Escaped From Police Protection Nearly a Year Ago, But Turns Up Near the Scene of His Crime.
(Correspondence of the Messenger.)
Goldsboro, N. C., September 19.
Henry Lanier, a young white man who formerly lived in Duplin county, was captured yesterday while rafting logs on Northeast river and placed in jail at Kenansville. The crime with which the young man is charged is horse stealing and was committed about one year ago. One morning during the month of September in 1901, a young man fairly well dressed and with good appearance rode into Goldsboro on horseback. At the livery stables where he tried to dispose of the animal he stated that he was on his way to the western part of the state and had concluded to take the train at this point, as he had been informed that a relative was very ill and he wished to get home with all possible speed. He did not readily find a purchaser for the horse and began to come down in price until he finally made the trade for $15.
The police were notified and took the young gentleman into their custody. He told his troubles with an innocence to the chief of police, which caused the officer to relax his suspicion of the young man's guilt. Not only did he succeed in persuading the officers to turn him loose, but he prevailed upon the chief to let him have $5 of the money with which to pay his expenses at the hotel while he proposed to remain in the city until he could establish his innocence and prove his identification. He went out of the police court into the street and forgot to return.
The next day the owner of the horse came to Goldsboro looking for his stolen animal, which he secured, but the young man had left for parts unknown. The owner of the horse stated that the young man belonged to one of the best families in Duplin county and that he would not make an effort to have him brought to justice. It seems that he went to South Carolina and remained until a few days ago, when he came back to within a few miles of the scene of his crime. It is said that he would not have been molested had he remained away.
