At a meeting of the citizens of the town of Frankfort, on the 18th Jan. 1800.

Governor James Garrard was unanimously chosen chairman, and Doc. Isaac E. Gano clerk.

The following resolution was unanimously agreed to :

In testimony of our sincere respect and veneration for the memory of our illustrious departed Fellow-Citizen, GEORGE WASHINGTON-

Resolved, That we will wear mourning scarves for one month.

After the adoption of the resolution William Murray esq. delivered the following

ELEGY,

Sacred to the memory
OF THE
Illustrious WASHINGTON

The bright sun of noon had declined to the West,
The cloud of the storm had extinguishment his ray,
The Hero had shone and now sinks to rest,
The black night of death succeeds his bright day.

No longer his beams enlighten the land,
Where Freedom! thy rights we e'er shall maintain
No longer the Hero conducts the firm band!-
Victor-no more-will he conquer again!

Thy cliffs cedar crown'd, Oh! Cuttawa! heard
Woe worn Lysander his grief thus express—
He wailed the dread loss, nor sought to be cheer'd,
Nor sought he for hope to relieve his distress.

When Columbia's Genius, forth from the cloud,
In glorious light, resplendent appeared;
The awe-struck Lysander with reverence bow'd,
And the voice of the Genius he heard.

In low and solemn accents speak-
As when permitted spirits come
To warn the thoughtless here below,
Of what shall be their final doom-

"Full long indulg'd, this happy land possess'd
This first, this greatest, fav'rite Son of mine;
'Twas his to free his country, when oppress'd
And far beyond the haughty Laurel thine.

His brow alone the Laurel did not bind-
Cassia, the fragrant, emblem meet of love,
And peaceful Olive, were therewith entwin'd :
All mortal honors!—greater are above!

When nought now remain'd which man could bestow
To honor the just, the brave, and the wise;
Thy minister, Heav'n, descended below,
And added thy gift-a Crown in the skies!"
