The Effect of the Ohio Victory.

With very few exceptions, Ohio has gone for the Republicans at every general election since the party was founded. If, therefore, it had been carried by the Republicans on Tuesday, the result would have produced only a slight effect on the States that vote in November next. But the election of Judge Hoadly and a Democratic majority in the Legislature, which secures a Democratic Senator in Congress, turns the tide in the other direction. This rather unexpected termination of a hard fought battle will exert a good deal of influence in those States which hold elections in the coming month.

The Democrats and Independents are aiming to turn the corrupt Republican party out of power at the next Presidential contest. To accomplish this, it is most desirable and advantageous to capture Republican States in advance of the greater struggle of 1884, and thus foreshadow the coming victory. In a word, they must not only conquer Republican States, but hold them with a strong hand. This important piece of work Ohio has now done. Last year the Democrats carried Ohio by a plurality of more than 10,000. They have again elected their ticket, and the plurality would have been larger than that of last year except for a quarrel in Cincinnati about local candidates. The Ohio victory will stir up the Democracy of the staid old Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It will arouse great enthusiasm among the Democrats and Independents of Massachusetts, and will greatly increase the majority of our own State candidates.
