Full Text

Gallant Action.

The New York correspondent of the Savannah Advertiser writes :
"I am informed of a gallant act performed in mid ocean by Captain Berry, of the steanship Charleston, which plies between the port by that name and this city. While he was standing on the promenade deck a little child in the arms of its nurse either sprang or fell overboard. As quick as thought the noble fellow followed, and almost before the little one touched the water he had the child in his arms and safe. Being an excellent swimmer, he sustained himself until the steamer was stopped and boats came to the rescue."

Such an act of gallantry is nothing more than the friends of Captain Berry would expect. Nevertheless the act is one whose parallel we do not remember as being of record-an old salt, past the meridian of life, his head besprinkled with the frost of age, leaps from the deck of the ship he commands, in mid ocean, and saves a mother's infant darling. All honor to the commodore's chivalry.
