FIRST ELK DIED THIS WEEK IN CALIFORNIA

First Elk To Sign Roll of Lodge No. 1 in New York Dies in San Diego, California.

When Cambridge Lodge, No. 1272, meets this evening in the Lodge room at the corner of High and Locust streets, announcement will be made of the death in San Diego, Cal., on Tuesday, of this week, of William Lloyd Bowron, who was the first Elk to acquire official membership in this country. The circumstances were these: When No. 1 Lodge, which was, of course, the first lodge in the country, was instituted in New York City, February 16, 1868, Mr. Bowron, who had been initiated, was the first man to sign the roll of the lodge, with a number of other gentlemen. So devoted was he to old No. 1 Lodge that he had requested that his remains be cremated and that the ashes be sent back East to the club-house of the Lodge in New York, where they will be kept in a silver urn.
