GARDEN TIPS ON THE ROSE
QUEEN OF THE GARDEN
The culture of roses does not dif-
fer materially from that of most
other decorative plants. They en-
joy the best soil they can be given.
They need an abundance of water,
but the ground must not be soggy.
They like plenty of fresh air and
regular feeding.
Soil. The ground should be deep-
ly prepared for roses; two feet is
sufficient, but deeper is better.
Use clay or a very heavy soil. Cow
manure is the best of all fertiliz-
ers, but other animal manures may
be used. Commercial fertilizers
give excellent results if used in
connection with compost, peat or
other vegetable matter.
Planting. Late winter or spring
planting is best for South Geor-
gia. The best plants are two years
old field grown budded-stock. Buy
your plants from reputable con-
cerns.
The secrets of success rose plant-
ing are: do it early; to keep the
roots from drying out while they
are being handled; and to tramp
the ground very firmly around the
plant to make the roots firm in
the soil.
Watch in the next Garden Cor-
ner for care and pruning of the
rose.
