Full Text
Yesterday morning, between the hours of twelve and one o'clock, the town was alarmed with the cry of fire. It was found to be in a large dwelling house belonging to John Brown, Esq. at the south end of the town. The fire had got to a great height before it was discovered, insomuch that of four families, tenants to Mr. Brown, in the house, consisting of twenty souls, scarce one of them escaped with any thing but their shirts. One young man jumped out of a garret window, between 20 and thirty feet high, and is considerably bruised; another came down the back stairs through the room where the fire was supposed to have begun, and was badly burnt; but they are both likely to do well. Scarce an article of the household furniture was saved. By the activity of the inhabitants, which is conspicuous on every such occasion, with the assistance of the engines, two houses which stood about 40 feet from the one burnt, were saved. While we regret, with Mr. Brown, the loss of a valuable house, we must sincerely sympathize with the unfortunate families who have lost their all—and hope those who have of this world's goods, and see their brethren in need, will not withhold them.
