Community Council Sets Parade, Dance, Games

Five West Side youth-serving agencies have combined to present a community-wide program for Halloween, Oct. 31.

West Side Community Service Council, as the combination has been named, is made up of the Lutheran Welfare Center, Gift St. Boys' Club, Sunshine Recreation Center, Gladden Community House and Sullivant Gardens Recreation Center.

The council has announced their combined plans as follows:

At Gift St. Boys' Club a party will be held for both boys and girls 12 years old and under. Halloween games featuring prizes for the winners will begin at 7 p.m. A costume parade will start at 8:30 p.m. with Floyd Gooding, Pat Wood and Al Benton acting as judges for the event. This program will end with serving of donuts and milk. Gooding has agreed to loan several of his carnival rides to the party.

Gladden Community House will hold activities for boys and girls 12 years old and under starting at 7 p.m. Features are: a spook house, fortune telling, bobbing for apples, games of skill and a masquerade parade starting at 7:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to children wearing the funniest, weirdest and most original costumes.

Sunshine Recreation Center will hold a dance for all teen-agers in the area beginning at 7:30 p.m and ending at 10 p.m. A rather unique incentive for getting home early will be offered the teen-agers.

The youths will register at the door as they enter the dance. When the dance is over, the teen-agers will be allowed about a half hour to reach their homes. Then, five names will be drawn from the registration slips received at the door by Sunshine's Advisory Council.

Using these slips, telephone calls will be made to the youths homes. If the teen-ager is home, he or she will win a silver dollar donated by the West Side Board of Trade. In the event the youth is not at home, another drawing will be made and other teen-agers called.

The Lutheran Welfare center combines its plans with the Gift St. Boys' Club.

Sullivant Gardens Recreation will present a movie for youngsters.

Boys Club Moms Plan Carnival

The Mothers' Auxiliary of the West Side Boys' Club will sponsor a "penny carnival" on three nights, Oct. 28, 29, 31.

The carnival, traditionally held in one evening, is being extended this year in order to help curb Halloween destruction and offering children something to do instead. It will be held at the Boys' Club, 115 S. Gift St.

A spokesman for the mothers' group said that a new array of features has been added to the traditional carnival. "At the top of this list" the spokesman said, "will be several rides donated by Floyd Gooding, president of the Boys' Club board of directors."

The spokesman for the group said that "all members of the Mothers' Auxiliary are helping in some way to make the carnival and party a success."
