Captain Poussin and Lieutenant Trimble, Commissioners of the National Road from Washington to New Orleans, arrived at New Orleans on the 30th of December. They examined the Western route, passing through Abingdon, Knoxville, Centerville (Alabama) Fordaille, (Mississippi) crossing the Rigolets and Chef Menteur. The distance of the road they travelled is said to have been about 1150 miles, passing over an excellent country for making a turnpike road, and in no instance finding a stream either larger or presenting greater difficulty, than the Potomac at Georgetown.
