THRILLING EXPERIENCE.
Fred H. Harris Slid 1,000 Feet Down
Mt. Washington Without Injury.

Fred H. Harris of this town, president of the Dartmouth college Outing club, had a thrilling experience on Mt. Washington Sunday and narrowly escaped serious injury at the end of a ski dash down its precipitous slope. Mr. Harris left Hanover late last week with a number of other students, with the intention of climbing Mt. Washington. The captain used skis, while the majority of the boys wore snowshoes up the mountain side.

He endeavored to make a record climb, and as far as he can estimate was successful in so doing. He would have gone higher, but for a shortage of food and weariness from his hard struggle. While descending the slope he was unable to reduce the fast time already being made, and discovered that after a continuous slide of 1,000 feet he was headed toward the rocks. He made wild grabs at small trees and other objects, and by chance caught a slender branch. He was hurled to the ground and received a bad shaking up, but was fortunate even in this in the face of death.

He reached the foot of the mountain safely, and, after spending the night at a house, took the train to Hanover, arriving late Monday evening, a day after his companions. For years such trips have been taken by Dartmouth students, but as far as can be learned Captain Harris has made the record climb up the mountain on skis. He is an enthusiastic lover of outdoor sport, and was one of the organizers of the college outing club a few years ago. Mr. Harris is son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Harris of North street.
