Figures just released by the Law Enforcement Section, Ohio Division of Wildlife, show a decrease in the number of violations of both hunting and fishing regulations during 1955 as against 1954.
Actually, hunting law violations were down rather sharply from 1246 in 1954 to 1033 in 1955. Following the same pattern as in the previous year, about one-third, or 340 cases were made for hunting without permission, followed by 83 cases of hunting without a license. In practically all cases of hunting without permission, the charges were filed by the landowner.
There was a total of 1479 fishing law violations in 1955 compared to 1849 during 1954. Again showing that it doesn't pay to go fishing without a license, alert Wildlife Management Agents (Game Protectors) made 1180 arrests of residents of Ohio fishing without a license. One hundred and two cases were made against non-residents fishing with a resident license and non-residents fishing without any license accounted for fifty-three cases.
Law Enforcement personnel made a total of 35 cases against commercial fishermen, 18 of which were for taking undersized fish and 10 for using illegal gill nets. The remaining cases included trap net without tag, untagged uphaul buoy, illegal trot line and unlicensed gill net tug. Overall the commercial fishing law violations were down from 68 in 1954 to 35 in 1955.
