Spray acreage under the Mediterranean Fruit Fly Program has been cut approximately 20,000 acres this week, despite the fact that the Medfly reclaimed one county that had been released from aerial coverage three weeks earlier.
The latest review of infested properties places 106,820 acres in the spray category as compared with 127,030 acres under treatment a week ago. Included in this new figure is a 1,000-acre tract near Elfers in Pasco County. This reinfestation is in the same general area as a fly find reported on September 24.
The largest cutbacks were noted in counties where infestations were the heaviest in recent months. Based on a similar report submitted two weeks ago, the decrease in spray acreage for Hillsborough County amounted to 7,000 acres, and the drop in Manatee to 6,000 acres.
This is the way the counties line up in relation to acreage covered in the aerial spray program: Hernando 1,800 Acres; Hillsborough, 19,950; Manatee, 16,660; Sarasota, 15,875; Pinellas, 10,950; Highlands, 10,000; Broward, 6,750; Polk, 6,560; Lee, 5,715; Orange, 4,500; Dade, 3,930; Hardee, 1,880; Hernando, 1,800; DeSoto, 1,250; and Pasco, 1,000.
