'Reduction, Not Mere Limitation' of Armaments Urged Upon U. S. Delegation
Nine North Dakotans, seven from Bismarck, are among 1,200 signers of a cabled appeal sent from New York by the Foreign Policy association to the American delegation at the London naval limitation conference.
The message urged "reduction, not mere limitation" of armaments. It was sent yesterday, after it had been written and signatures of prominent men and women authorized within 72 hours through an intensive telegraphic campaign of the association.
The North Dakota signers were: Elizabeth Preston Anderson, Park River, president of the state Women's Christian Temperance union; Rt. Rev. John Poyntz Tyler, Fargo, Episcopal bishop of North Dakota; and A. G. Burr, member of the state supreme court, Rev. Ira Herzberg, Rev. O. S. Rindahl, Rev. Ellis L. Jackson, Rev. Floyd Logee, Rev. Walter Vater, and Rev. J. S. Wildes, all of Bismarck.
The message said the Kellogg-Briand peace compact outlawing war had been signed by all the participants in the parley and should guide the conferences.
The message reminded the delegates that President Hoover, in his Armistice day speech, had said that this country would match the naval reduction of any other nation, and added the warning that the failure of the conference would have a calamitous effect on American public opinion.
The message was signed by nine governors, including Theodore Christianson, Minnesota.
