TO THE MUSES
On DUMOURIER's entering AMSTERDAM.
HARK! hark! 'tis the Trumpet of Liberty
sounds,
The prowess of France it proclaims;
Her Hero still conquers: his glory resounds;
And Heaven still seconds his arms.
Ye foes to Democracy, hide your mean heads!
Sink down to the Night you admire;
The splendour which heaven-born Liberty sheds,
To view, you can never aspire.
Like owls at the sight of the planet of day,
You blink—but you dare not do more;
Your optics if open'd the whole to survey,
Their Vision would ever be o'er!
Blind—blind as the earth-worm, which symbols
your souls.
Go!—grovel forever in dirt!
Enslav'd by the meanness which ever controuls
The timid, slave-glorying heart!
But hail! ye bless'd Sons of Columbia's Clime!
—Ye Gallican heroes—all hail!
The time is approaching—the heavenly time,
When freedom o'er all shall prevail.
See—noble Dumourier! darling of Fame!
The thunder of Freedom he bears!
The Despots of Europe turn pale at his name,
And shudder whene'er he appears!
Oh! still may he conquer—'till Freedom and Peace,
United, preside o'er the world!
May Monarchy perish!—may slavery cease!
And faction to Satan be hurl'd!
