CHICAGO (INS) - Officials of a Chicago hospital urgently called today for blood donors to help keep two young brothers from bleeding to death.
John and James Siambones are suffering from hemophilia -- a condition in which blood does not readily coagulate -- and have been bleeding steadily for almost three weeks.
South Shore Hospital doctors reported each has been receiving plasma at the rate of one pint every two hours and that the hospital's blood supply is virtually depleted.
Blood purchased from commercial plasma banks is also exhausted. The hemophilia foundation, joining the battle Monday, reported its supplies are dwindling.
John, 14, has been receiving transfusions since he underwent an emergency appendectomy some three weeks ago. His 12-year-old brother James, who is bleeding from the kidney, joined him at the hospital shortly after John's arrival.
Their parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Siambones of East Chicago, Ind., are praying donors will answer the appeal and offer blood to keep the boys alive.
