The Game they are Playing.

In the last Whig, there is a notice that a meeting of the Union democracy would be held at Upper Homochitto on Saturday. Where the movers of this call, and what is their object, we are not informed. We are a democrat, and a union democrat—we publish the democratic paper of this county—a press owned by the democracy—and this position has heretofore entitled us to the privilege of knowing when a meeting of the party would be held, and what would be its object. In this instance, we have not only been deprived of this privilege, but the call for a democratic meeting is published in the Whig—a paper notoriously hostile to democracy, and opposed to the slave interest of the South. What have we done, that we are thus cut off from the confidence of democrats? Have we proved ourself unworthy the position we occupy, or unfaithful to the principles of democracy? If so, tell us wherein we have faltered, and our commission as editor of the democratic journal of your county is at your hands. Have we strayed away from the paths of our democratic fathers—or have you found in the endearing name of Union, an element that destroys all difference between a whig and a democrat? Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? Yet, are we not told that under the title of Union, there is in future to be no distinction between a federal whig and a republican democrat?

We have not yet heard who is at the bottom of this call in the Whig. We have heard it whispered, that the whigs think our friends in Lower Homochitto, because they stay at home and pay their debts, as all genuine democrats do—are susceptible of being humbugged—that they were humbugged in the late elections—and that they shall be humbugged again. Why was this call made at so short a time? Why was not time given for the public to prepare to attend. Has it thus early come to be, under the guidance of whiggery, that democracy is afraid of day-light? That it wants no body to investigate its motives and conduct? Do those self-constituted whigs who are rejoicing at the supposed gullibility of our democratic brethren of Homochitto, think they are afraid to have any but a few wire-working whigs, and desultory democrats, to attend their meeting. If so, the people of that region—ever proverbial for their candor and honor—are misrepresented. Their deeds are not evil, and they prefer not darkness to light.

Only one day was given by this call in the Whig. The notice could not have been read by a dozen citizens of Homochitto. It was concocted near this place by whigs—it was published in a whig paper, and was intended to trap the honest democracy of the pine woods. The call is an insult to every true democrat in the county; and if we mistake not, the vengeance of the intended victims, will be hurled upon the perpetrators of the scheme. Why not have met at Woodville? Why not have given notice, so that all could attend? The answer is simple. The whigs did not desire to be interfered with. They had already cut and dried their resolutions, etc., for the occasion, and basely skulked from giving a general invitation to the democratic party of the county to meet them. If we know aught of the character of the yeomanry of Homochitto, it is, that they detest such trickery as this. Who are the Union democrats—who the Dis-Union democrats? Have not the party everywhere, in all the States, reorganized, and has not all opposition to the compromise been conceded. Where does the difference exist between us? If any democrat wishes to join the whigs let him do so: but if he serves the whigs, he shall not serve the democracy. God and Belial can not be praised in the same breath.

We look with anxiety to the next Whig to see the proceedings of this meeting. We presume we will not be even allowed to publish them.
