Full Text
Our belief is that inside of five years there will not be a free trader in the United States, except here and there a perverse soul that, no matter what proposition might be offered, would insist upon being on the off side. Our reason is, we believe the belief will become universal, that no generous nation can bear the competition with semi-barbarous nations without protection. For instance, in 1887, that was only eight years ago, there was imported into this country 4,000,000 pounds of cotton from Egypt. But year before last the amount reached was 43,368,000 pounds. Now inside of five years Japan will lay down cotton manufactured goods in San Francisco harbor at a less price per pound than the Southern planter can raise cotton for. What will our free-trade friends have to say then?—Salt Lake Tribune.
