Full Text
Maracaybo, which by the armistice of 26th November was left in common to both parties, joined the patriot cause on the 27th of January, hoisted the flag and proclaimed the government of Colombia. This event is of great moment: it gives command of all the channels of intercourse and trade with the republic to the independents. All the grand arteries are now held by the Patriots :
The Orinoco, with which the Cassanare opens the way from the Atlantic to Cundinamarca ;-the Lake of Maracaybo, a central key, which with the Sola, leads even to Cucuta (where the General Congress are now in session ;) the Magdalena and Cauca, and further west to the river Atrato, which forms the Gulf of Darien :and on the side of the Pacific, the rivers San Juan, Patia, Tumaco and Guayaquil, which last disembogues in the gulf of the same name. All these and hundreds of minor streams will soon bear the rich freight of the richest country on the globe.
