Full Text

From the Boston Chronicle of Thursday last. By the Enterprise Stage we were favored with the New-York Gazette, of Tuesday, which states the arrival there of the pilot-boat Erie, Capt. Mitchell, & Mr. Lynch, flag bearer from the Chesapeake. Left Adm. Cochrane's Ship on the 20th. off Smith's Point. The Adm. said he was on his way to Halifax, where he expected to meet Ld. Hill with a large force. A copy of Adm. Cochrane's answer to Mr. Monroe is received: in which the Admiral regrets that he had no powers to enter into a discussion of a reciprocal reparation of injuries as proposed by Mr. Monroe: and repeats that unless indemnity is made or depredations in Canada, he could not countermand the orders to his officers to destroy and lay waste such towns and districts upon the coast, as may be found assailable. The admiral however, had sent Mr. Monroe's letter to England. On board the squadron, they had advice from England as late as the 3d of August, nothing was reported on board relative to American affairs.
