This Day the Episcopal Ministers of this Town waited on his Excellency the Governor with the following Address.
May it please your Excellency,
The Ministers of the Episcopal Church in this Town beg leave to congratulate your Excellency on your Advancement to the Government of this Province.--We acknowledge with the sincerest Gratitude and Loyalty, his Majesty's paternal Care in this Appointment, and we promise ourselves all the Happiness which inflexible Integrity, joined with much Wisdom and long Experience are fitted to produce.
Your Excellency's past Administration gives us a pleasing Prospect in Respect to the civil Interests of the People ; and your Regard for Religion leaves us no room to doubt your Protection and Encouragement of the Church of England:
It is our duty Sir, and we shall sincerely endeavour to render your Administration easy and successful, by promoting the Religion of Jesus Christ, the best Support of Government, and of that Loyalty to the King and Duty to your Excellency, which are genuine fruits of it.
With Hearts devoted to the public Happiness, we beseech Almighty God to prosper your Excellency's Administration for the Advancement of his Glory, and the Welfare of this Province.
To which his Excellency was pleased to return the following Answer.
Gentlemen,
I am much obliged to you for the favourable Sentiments and kind Wishes which you have expressed in your Address.
My regard to the Interest of Religion and my Veneration for the Church of England. will incline me to afford all the Protection you can desire.
You have a just Claim to it, whensoever you may stand in need of it.
