Full Text

Extract of a letter from Trenton, Feb. 22.

"It begins to be strongly expected that the lucid body lately discovered in the heavens, and generally supposed by the people of New-England to be a comet, is nothing more than one of the air-balloons lately invented in France, and perhaps directed this way for the diversion of sundry gentlemen of an aerial or speculative taste, who have a mind to take a peep at us incog. What strengthens this conjecture, is, that the Philosophical Society of Philadelphia has as yet taken no notice of the track, situation, or retrogradation of this supposed comet; which, no doubt they were early convinced is nothing more than a mere balloon, and, consequently, whose curvilineal direction or movement is not worth attending to."

Strong expectation that the lucid body lately discovered in the heavens, supposed by New-England people to be a comet, is an air-balloon invented in France, possibly directed for diversion of aerial or speculative gentlemen to peep incognito; strengthened by the Philosophical Society of Philadelphia taking no notice of its track, situation, or retrogradation, convinced it is merely a balloon whose movement is not worth attending.
