VULCAN BOWL PUBLICITY:
Members of the seven-man Vulcan Bowl Committee were scheduled to meet last Sunday . . . The turn-out to the Wilberforce-Grambling game was less than the promoters figured. They are trying to fathom out why it did not draw better . . . Grambling players complained of food poison the night before the game . . . All but about five are said to have had stomach trouble following a meal which kept them up and down all night before the game . . . Grambling's offense was slowed because they did not have mud cleats : . . . Coaches are said to have been given a slice of the promotional pie.
Some members of the VBC are talking critically of bringing in a hired writer on salary for one week . . . Tuskegee Coach Cleve L. Abbott made newsreels of the game . . . Both Grambling and Wilberforce are on his 1948 grid schedule . . . Ross Owens, Cage Coach Adams and Publicity Director R. S. Darnaby of Tuskegee were also up to the VB . . . Ditto "Squat" Johnson and Dr. White of Little Rock . . . President H. C. Trenholm, A. & M. President J. F. Drake, Grambling President J. F. Drake . . . Jones, Miles President W. A. Bell and A and T Coach Buck Bell.
Fan conduct at the VB game was near-perfect.... The Tiger-Wave match was superlative competition.. The weather was ideal ..There was too little entertainment for the visiting fans and teams.. Trophies for the teams and medals for the players were deserved in the VB classic ..The VB game should be promoted as a community project with fresh civic spirit and business energy.
Visiting newspaper men resented the unnecessary delay in getting into Rickwood, scene of the game . . . claim gates were opened by far too late giving no chance at all for pregame interviews . . . John Christopher, sophomore second string Grambling quarterback drew repeated praise from the press box for his deceptive ball handling. . . The mixup on the chain during Wilberforce's fourth quarter touchdown drive gave the Green Wave approximately 10 yards according to press box spotters. Many fans and writers thought the Wilberforce team had a legitimate squawk on the attempted conversion after the final Green Wave TD.. seeing as if ball split uprights. Visiting Coaches were of the opinion that Grambling could have won .had they elected to stick to their deceptive running attack instead of taking to the air . . . Paul Younger, the 19 year old Grambling halfback is deserving to all the press notices he has received . . . same true of Freddie Hall and Walter Sellers of Wilberforce. . . Jimmy Newberry, Black Barons right hander, recently drew a $20 fine and a 15 day suspension for attacking an Ump in a South-of-the-border baseball game according to latest edition of The Sporting News. . . Newberry pulled a similar trick out at Rickwood Field last season but got away with it this time approximately 200 fans swarmed out on the playing field, attacked the flinger, finally sending him to hospital for minor treatment. The trouble started when the Ump called a balk on Newberry with the bases loaded.
