The immediate causes of death in a drowned person are the want of vital air, with loss of tone in the moving fibres of the heart itself. The great object is to renew the action of the heart and arteries by: 1st. Restoring the heat and respiration by wiping the body dry and applying gradual uniform heat through various means including fire, warm bath, sun, body warmth, warm coverings, or rubbing with warm clothes; 2d. Repeatedly inflating the lungs via tube in windpipe or nostril as recommended by Dr. Monro; 2d. Restoring action of moving fibres by frictions, injections of tobacco smoke, vomiting, warm stimulating drinks, etc.; 3d. Lessening blood quantity by bloodletting with caution.
