Full Text

The second winter of war in Russia finds the Germans on the defensive again. During the summer of 1941 the Nazis were able to advance in northern and central Russia almost to the gates of Moscow, only to be pushed back when winter set in. The area regained in that offensive is still in Russian hands.

In the summer of 1942 the Nazis forged ahead again, this time in the South, reaching Stalingrad and coming within sight of the Caucasian oil fields. The 1942-43 winter offensive, now two months old, finds the Russians making a comeback drive, recapturing territory (black areas) lost this year and even some in the central area lost the previous year. The key objectives, however, on which the outcome of future battles depend, are still in German hands. The holder of Rostov, Kharkov, Kursk, Bryansk, Smolensk, Vyazma and Rzhev, will have the advantage of rail-supplied springboards for the coming summer. Solid black line represents approximate present battle line. Within the area regained the Russians have pocketed Nazi forces before Stalingrad and at Millerovo.
