College Will Try Alternate Work And Study Plan
Birmingham-Southern Has New Solution for Self Help Students

SAN ANTONIO, Tex., Sept. 6. (UP).—A cooperative education plan under which students lacking funds may work their way through school and still devote full time to their studies will be inaugurated at Birmingham-Southern college this fall.
Under the system, announced by Dr. Russell S. Poor, director of Southern extension department, students will be paired upon entrance into the school.
One of the students attends college while the other works. At the end of the semester, the two exchange places. One is always in the classroom, the other on the job.
According to Dr. Poor, "the primary function of the plan is to do away with attempting to work and study at the same time."
The plan was first tried 33 years ago at the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Poor said, and now 5000 students are gaining an education under its provisions.
In addition to doing away with trying to combine work and study in one year, the plan will enable the vocational student to obtain practical experience in his trade or profession while he is still in the learning stage.
Here is how the plan works:
Students A and B are unable to attend school without securing financial aid or working. Student A enters school, while student B obtains a job, though the extension system, in a local industry.
Students A, aided by student B, will supply the college with custom skilled labor . . . student works in the fields of economics, business administration and industrial chemistry, Dr. Poor said, although he is attempting to reach a working agreement with a Birmingham newspaper to allow journalism students to reap its benefits.
