FLAMING FORESTS IN
NEW ENGLAND

Maine Woods Ablaze; Similar Fires Reported From Other Old Colony States.

[By Morning Journal Special Leased Wire.]

Boston, July 13.—The fires which have been burning for days in the Maine forests continued today and tonight in many districts of that state while similar fires in New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island and Massachusetts increased by thousands of dollars the total of the damage.

Historic Plymouth, in this state, was endangered by a woods fire, which ran close to the outskirts of the town, sparks from the burning trees and underbrush dropping thickly into the main streets. The entire fire fighting force of the town was kept busy all day patrolling and fighting the flames.

Near the village of Washington, in this state, a large acreage of timber and small growth was burned over and a sawmill and farm house were destroyed by the most extensive forest blaze that this state has known for years.

Forest fires were also reported in New Hampshire and Vermont wild land sections, but most of them were apparently well in hand tonight though none will be extinguished completely until a heavy rain sets in.

The situation in Maine showed no improvement tonight. In scores of towns the red glare of burning forests was plainly visible and the atmosphere clouded densely with smoke.

Many new fires broke out during the day.
