Dr. John P. Koehler, head of the Milwaukee county dispensary, staged his first "gas rehearsal," late Friday, before an audience of 15 persons, including five women and one child.
It was the first test of the new Gilchrist chlorine gas ejector recently received at the dispensary. Col. H. L. Gilchrist, United States army medical corps, the inventor of the machine, claims to have successfully treated more than 2,700 cases of whooping cough and colds. Local physicians will await with interest the report of Dr. Koehler following a series of tests.
The subjects spent 45 minutes in the gas filled chamber. The child, an 8-year-old boy, began to cry and refused to enter, but finally he was coaxed into the room and was seated in a chair near the door.
Some of the subjects played cards while others read magazines and newspapers.
One woman said she was seeking a cure for hay fever and declared she had been suffering from the ailment for 42 years.
All of the subjects were told to return Saturday, 3 p. m., for a second treatment.
