Several weeks ago our contemporary of the Clarke Journal congratulated the people of that county upon the promptness with which its deserving sheriff, Jos. F. Ryan, had paid the county taxes into the State treasury, when so many others had failed to perform that duty either at the proper time or in the full amount. Taking this for his key-note, Scruggs, of the Warrenton Whig, who "plays on a harp uv a thousand strings" whenever Fauquier can be induced to afford a theme, makes a similar boast in behalf of the sheriff of that county, John Q. Marr. But a word in Scruggs' ear privately: did not one of the commissioners of the revenue for Fauquier delay his book until after the time when it was required to be closed, whereby the sheriff became entitled to an extra allowance of time for his return to the State? We suspect we have Scruggs there.
The books of the commissioners of the revenue for this county were duly completed in the time required by law, and our worthy sheriff, Dr. Lewis A. Miller, made a complete and satisfactory return to the State within the prescribed time. In view of the faithful manner in which Dr. Miller has discharged the duties of his office, it is to be regretted that his personal popularity has been trammelled by a party nomination, when as an independent candidate there could be no reason why he should not be re-elected by an unanimous vote.
