Trouble in the "University of the Pacific".—A few evenings since, in the "University of the Pacific" at Santa Clara, a fight occurred between members of the two literary societies, composed of students attending the Universities. The societies have been in the habit of meeting in different rooms, and giving public exhibitions. The San Jose Reporter, thus speaks of a "flare up" which happened at a late exhibition:

It seems that there is considerable rivalry between the two societies—the Archanian being Democratic, and the Ridzomian being Republican. A few evenings since, the Archanian society gave a public exhibition, and as usual, several ladies and gentlemen of the town, attended. The members of the Ridzomian society, in order to interrupt the exercises going on in the other society, created a great hubbub, and made as much noise as possible. Three several times, the Archanians requested them not to make so much unnecessary noise, but they persisted; and the fourth time when the messenger went to the Ridzomians to deliver the message, they shut the door in his face, alleging that they were discussing the "nigger question," and did not desire to be interrupted. The messenger concluded that he would go in and assist in the discussion, and accordingly, the first "knock down argument" that he made, was at the door. This he accomplished, and in he went. A scuffle then commenced between the messenger and some of the Ridzomians; and some of the Archanians hearing that their fellow member was in a "tight place," and likely to be overpowered, immediately came to the rescue. A rough and tumble fight then ensued. The next day, the faculty of the University held a meeting, and resolved that the young fellow who knocked down the door, should make a public avowal of his fault or be expelled. As his action was approved by his society, he declined to do so unless the Ridzomians should first apologize for having interrupted the exhibition of the other society, and treated its messenger with contempt. The faculty then expelled the young fellow and notified the Archanians that they were no longer entitled to any of the privileges of the University. All the members of the Archanian society (about 30,) then quit the University.
