RECREATION

Dear Sports Lover:

I read your letter of yesterday which was printed in this "Public Opinion" column of the Press in which you asked that the Izaak Walton League should take it upon themselves to see that boats be allowed on the river near the creamery.

We agree, Mr. Sports Lover, that the working man must have recreation and that this recreation must be near by, but we, as sportsmen, must be prepared to make sacrifices during this war, especially when these sacrifices are for the safety of the workers in defense plant areas, and the valuable material made in these plants.

If you will note that all the signs along the river by the creamery read "Keep Out—Defense Area", this means that the Ford Motor Company, which is engaged in important defense work is directly across the river and in danger of sabotage. These signs will be found surrounding all plants, water works, reservoirs, airports and industries necessary to the defense of our country and the protection of the properties where war materials are made.

Every member of the Izaak Walton League is a war worker, and works long hours. He also is a sportsman who loves to fish and hunt. He also is a conservationist who in spare times helps to rear fish for planting depleted streams and lakes. He raises pheasants and feeds them, so that they may live through the hard winter months when feed is scarce. And mainly to recognize and observe signs on private property without questioning their right to be there. The main reason that we do propagate and preserve our wild life and fish and enjoy every minute that we do this is that we want to preserve for our men who are fighting on the front lines, that recreation, which they left to fight for and which they may still have, to enjoy when they return.

That, Mr. Sports Lover, is the aim and purpose of the Izaak Walton League.

If you will write me a letter or card, I shall be glad to furnish you with information regarding good fishing areas where boats can be docked in the river and Ford Lake.

This area is located within five miles of Ypsilanti.

Main Argument

while recreation is important for workers, sportsmen must sacrifice access to certain areas during wartime to ensure safety in defense plants like ford motor company; the izaak walton league focuses on conservation to preserve outdoor activities for returning soldiers.
