BIG GERMAN BASE TAKEN BY SOVIETS
Strategic River Port Taken in Bloody Battle for Kiev Bulge

LONDON, Dec. 14. -- Cherkasy, the last remaining Nazi bastion in the middle of the Dnieper River between Kremenchug and Kiev, has been lost to the charging Red Army. the Berlin radio Says, as Vatutin's First Ukrainian Army turned the die against von Mannstein in a bloody battle for the Kiev bulge.

Cherkasy is a strategic river port and main rail line, linking Minsk and Gomel with the Odessa sea and Black Sea. Capture of Cherkasy paves the way for a junction of the Russian forces operating out of the Kremenchug bridgehead with those on the southern edge of the Kiev salient.

troops, aided by powerful guerrilla forces behind the German lines, gained ground for the third straight day in the battle for the Kiev bulge and a spectacular advance of 20 miles had been made in 24 hours.

Tank and infantry battles raged throughout Monday and the official communique said about one battalion of Germans were killed and the back of the fierce German counter-offensive had been broken.
