Full Text

The Washington Globe, the official organ of this government, contained, a few days since, the following pompous announcement:

The Hon. Wm. H. Wharton, Minister Plenipotentiary, from the Republic of Texas, and Col. John Wolfe, his Secretary, arrived yesterday, and have taken lodgings at Gadsby's Hotel.

Republic of Texas!' Is any such government known to, or recognized by the authorities at Washington, whose 'Minister Plenipotentiary' could be properly received and accredited as such, consistently with our professed friendly relations with Mexico? Republic of Texas,' eh! Why, at her late election for president, there were polled in that mighty republic, almost [but not quite] four thousand votes! or about one half as many as the county of Madison can turn out on an emergency. Now suppose the vicious and vagrant portion of the citizens of this county, becoming weary of the wholesome restraints of law, and incensed because our constitution would not permit them to make slaves of another portion, should kick up a revolt—proclaim the county an 'independent republic'—gain one or two battles if you please—get themselves dubbed 'General,' 'President,' 'Secretary of State,' 'Secretary of War,' 'Secretary of the Navy,' &c. &c. &c.—and finally, send 'Ministers Plenipotentiary' here and there: would not such a republic deserve about as much respect as that of Texas?

Texas, once more.—We don't know but we ought to retract whatever we may have said to the disparagement of this new 'republic,' in view of the unspeakable benefits which she is about to confer on these United States! What honor, too, to be allowed to monopolize a traffic which is pronounced to be piracy, and punishable with death, when carried on from beyond sea! Such signal favors—or, as the New Orleans editor has it, such praise-worthy determinations of the Texan republic,' must certainly remove every objection to the acknowledgment of her independence, which a nation of pirates may be supposed to have felt.

The Washington Globe announced the arrival of Hon. Wm. H. Wharton, Minister Plenipotentiary from the Republic of Texas, and Col. John Wolfe, his Secretary, at Gadsby's Hotel. The article mocks this reception, questioning US recognition of Texas given relations with Mexico, compares Texas's small electorate to a county's, and sarcastically suggests retracting criticism due to alleged benefits like piracy.
