Peacemaker Finds Job Too Dangerous

"From heah on out, ah'm gonna stick to mah own p's and q's!" Jack Johnson, Negro (no relation to the prizefighter) mused to himself Monday while gingerly fingering a variety of cuts about his face and head. Johnson found the role of peacemaker a painful one Saturday night in El Centro when he intervened in a squabble between his friend, John Roberts, Negro, and an unidentified man. The unidentified man whipped out a pocket knife, carved for a few seconds upon Johnson's face, and then fled.
