Falling Rock On Alcan Hits Car

FAIRBANKS (AP)-A California motorist was hospitalized here this week with injuries suffered when the automobile in which she was riding was struck by a falling rock on the Alaska Highway.

Mrs. Emil H. Hopf of Los Angeles was treated for a fractured vertebrae. Her husband, a retired Firestone Rubber Co. employee, and 16-year-old son were not injured. The three were on a vacation trip.

The accident occurred in Yukon Territory about 67 miles from the Alaska border. The rock crashed into the side of the car, which blew a tire and careened into a 35 foot ditch.

A bulldozer from a nearby road camp pulled the car from the ditch. Hopf had to drive 100 miles before word could be sent for a rescue plane to fly his wife to Fairbanks.
