FOR THE GAZETTE OF THE UNITED STATES.
MR. FENNO,
The enemies of the Constitution of the United States having failed in a seven years' open war against it, have now shifted their ground. Seven years has the Constitution sustained their assaults, uninjured and unimpaired; and seventy times seven will, we trust, elapse, before the views and wishes of its enemies will be accomplished.
The great design of the present moment is, to effect their object by sure, but indirect means; to destroy the confidence of the people in their long tried, old, faithful patriots, by attempts to strip them of every political virtue, and to blast their characters as tyrants and traitors—for if you destroy the friends of the system, the system falls of course. Suggery, slanderers, another seven years' labour is before you. The people will be just—just to themselves, and just to those they love—The President's reputation has been maturing forty years.
Cease Vipers, cease to gnaw the file,
The produce, your own blood and bile.
