Four Were Received By Territorial Auditor Caine.
As a result of the recent drumming up by Territorial Auditor Caine, some of the county clerks who have not complied with the law and reported the financial condition of their counties to the official named within the specified time, are now getting a move on themselves, and four of the statements reached Mr. Caine yesterday.
These came from Millard, Emery, Beaver and Wayne counties. That of the former shows receipts, $5,391.61, and expenditures, $6,578.42, leaving a balance of $1,813.19. Emery had receipts of $9,517.92 and expenditures of $3,448.24, leaving the balance in the treasury at $6,069.68. For Beaver the receipts were $8,113.25 and the disbursements $8,369.59. The assets of the county are listed at $1,631.68 and the liabilities $3,092.20; cash, $182.20. Wayne's receipts were $921.28 and disbursements $763.06.
To date but little attention has been paid by the delinquent county collectors to the recent circular letter sent out by the auditor and it is more than likely that the sharp stick will be brought into requisition. As a matter of fact, however, the counties are nearer paid up for the past year than for any previous year.
There are quite a number of delinquents, but with few exceptions the amounts involved are not large and their payment would not swell the territorial finances materially, although it would enable the auditor to balance his books and check up with the treasurer.
The principal exceptions are Salt Lake and Millard counties and the auditor proposes to adopt some extreme measures to collect the amounts due. In the event of a much longer delay on the part of the officials responsible for the delinquencies.
