Sensational Spectacle on Mechanic Street Last Night.
A probable attempt at burglary was frustrated about 11 o'clock last night at the residence of Mrs. McGookin, No. 25 south Mechanic street, between Main and High.
At that hour, while Adjutant Smith and Comrade Jessup, of John Brown post, were on their way home from up town, they were attracted by the wild screams of women and indications of excitement about the house. In the flash of the electric light they saw a ladder erected at the front window. The men leaped over the fence into the yard, and arrived just in time to see a man scale the back fence and disappear in a twinkling.
Another version of the affair states that the citizen who was so suddenly impressed that it was "time for disappearing," was a prominent young man of this city, who was trying to see into, or get into, the upper window.
