ENLARGE PHONE SERVICE FOR BROCKTON USE

MANY HOMES, BUSINESS PLACES BENEFIT FROM MOUNTAIN STATES INCREASE AT EAST COUNTY COMMUNITY.

A project for expansion and improvement of telephone service for residents of Brockton was completed, and the new facilities placed in service on February 23, by the Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company, P. H. Penner, Culbertson manager of the company announced today.

Brockton has been served previously by three toll stations, which were connected directly to a long distance telephone circuit. The new service arrangement provides 24 switching service for 37 toll stations installed in 30 residences and 7 places of business in Brockton.

The job involved the installation of switching equipment to connect any local subscriber's telephone with the long distance circuit, the installation of telephone instruments for the new users and construction of branch lines to customer's premises, Penner said.

Some of these distribution lines will serve more than one subscriber.

In discussing the new service expansion, Penner explained that users in Brockton can be connected with people on other branch lines in the community by the Culbertson operator, through use of equipment in the Culbertson telephone office which controls the switching facilities in Brockton. On calls to Culbertson or points beyond, the new facilities connect the caller to the operator, who handles them in the usual way. When the long distance circuit is already in use, the calling party hears a busy signal.

The cost of the project which was started by the Brockton Woman's Club was in the neighborhood of $6,000, Penner said, with about $5,000 of that amount being spent for distribution lines in Brockton. The balance covers the cost of the switching equipment at Brockton, and facilities required in the Culbertson telephone offices.
