Littleton, December 28, 1804.
Honoured Sir
I took the liberty to call on you last winter
when I was in Portland, with a view of selling
shares in Littleton Bridge, across Connecticut
river :--and I remember with high esteem the
polite treatment I received; which encourages
me to trouble you, sir, again with a line.
There is now a grant of a Turnpike from the
termination of the one through the Notch of the
White Hills to Connecticut River, at the place
pitched upon to build Littleton Bridge: there is
likewise a grant for a Turnpike to Cross Con-
necticut river, a Lyman to pass down through
the lower notch to Sandwich, if ours fails and
that goes on, it will turn the great bulk of the
travel that way, as it is exceedingly difficult to
cross Connecticut river without a bridge.
If we can go on with our bridge, there is no
doubt but the bulk of the travel will come that
way, as the committee who were appointed to
lay out the road from St Albans to Connecti-
cut River, after viewing both routes, are in fa-
vour of the upper one, through Littleton. - We
do not feel ourselves able to go on without some
assistance from abroad, and our eyes are to Portland,
as that is the object in view.
I wish sir, a line from you and that you
would let me know what the prospect is with
respect to selling some shares in Portland ;-I
myself or any other gentleman should come down
what credentials would be necessary?- If you
sir, will be so obliging as to write to me, I expect
the bearer of this letter will return one to me.
Sir, from your very
Humble Servant.

Main Argument
the writer seeks help from the recipient in portland to sell shares in the littleton bridge project across connecticut river, noting turnpike grants and a committee's preference for the upper route to attract travel, as local efforts cannot proceed without external assistance.
