THE fast-sailing Ship Independence, arrived at Providence, from Hamburg, has brought letters to Merchants in this town, as late as July 7. The following extracts are from authentic sources.
"HAMBURGH, July 6, 1797.
"Lord Malmesbury, you may have heard, is going over to France. Unless the moderate party of the two Councils, in their present struggle with the Directory which seems approaching to a crisis, gain a decided influence over it, I shall despair of Peace.--A speedy settlement of our dispute depends much upon it. You will have seen Pastoret's motion, respecting the United States. Mr. Adams's speech will come very apropos.--It is the speech of an INDEPENDENT AMERICAN."
SAME DATE.
"We have information from England to June 30. The naval disturbances are settled, and Parker hung. France seems quite pacifically disposed towards the U. States."
The June packet has arrived at Halifax, from England. Accounts to June 23d only.
From HALIFAX Aug. 14.
"Our advices from England, are to 23d June, by the packet. All is now going on, better than we feared from former reports. The sailors mutiny entirely suppressed, and upon the best principles. Ireland getting right. Cash paid at the Bank. Provision made for government arrearages, and suspended payments. The prospect of Peace more promising. Indeed it may be fairly looked for, before Christmas: which will give activity to the American commerce."
