WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 12.
On Friday last the trial of Jason Fairbanks, for the murder of Elizabeth Fales, on the 18th of May last, was concluded before the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts, sitting at Dedham. The evidence of Fairbanks' criminality was clear and conclusive; and little or nothing appeared in extenuation of his guilt. The Jury went out on Friday evening, after 10 o'clock, and returned their verdict next morning, that the prisoner was "GUILTY!" The Court on Saturday passed sentence of DEATH upon him: "After which the Chief Justice addressed him in terms portraying the heinousness of his crime before him, and exhorting him to repentance: but he remained, as he always has done, apparently insensible—the only person in the assembly who was not affected at the solemnity of the scene."
"This judgment of the Court, and the final verdict of the Jury, appear to meet the public approbation."
