He has realized Muscle Shoals. His Lame Duck amendment is a reality likewise. He has knocked out the courts' power of injunction in labor disputes. The NRA code system has eliminated children from industry.
But is the country much happier?
The "interests" still are trying to nullify everything that he has accomplished.
Times certainly are far from satisfactory yet.
The senator has toiled, since he first came to Washington 30 years ago, for a handful of reforms that finally he has effected—and now he must begin toiling again, as much at the beginning as ever, to prevent them from being counteracted by the same folk he has been opposing for the last three decades.
There are no more lame ducks, for example: it doesn't make much difference. The power interests are trying to gain control of Muscle Shoals. Labor's lot today scarcely can be termed ideal.
Senator Norris himself is referred to by his erstwhile fellow progressives as, in a sense, a conservative. That is to say, they regard him as one who supports an administration which does not advocate as advanced a program as they are inclined to favor.
The idea of Senator Norris as a reactionary may be laughable, but it is a notion one hears suggested in radical political circles in Washington.
